Picnic to Somanathapura and Talakadu

Duration: 6-7hrs

About this tour: This is a full day picnic to visit the temples of Somanathapura and Talakadu, which lie to the south-east of Mysore. On the way you can enjoy one of the most scenic rural areas of Karnataka, dotted with palm trees, small villages, paddy and sugarcane fields. The river Cauvery flows through the area, providing sustenance to the land.

Tour Coverage:

  • Keshava Temple, Somanathapura: Built in the 13th century, the temple at Somanathapura is one of the finest and best examples of Hoysala architecture. The Hoysala kings ruled Karnataka and its neighboring regions between the 10th and 14th centuries, and were major patrons of art and architecture.
  • Talakadu: Our next stop will be the pilgrimage town of Talakadu along the banks of the River Cauvery. This town originally had around 50 temples, which are buried under the sand today. Locals believe the town was buried due to a curse. We will visit some of the temples which have been excavated and are open to the public.
  • Village walk: On the way back from Talakadu, we will stop at one of the many small villages for a brief exploration. We can take a walk through the farms, enjoy the simple beauty of rural life, and find a quiet spot to have a picnic lunch.

Starts: We will depart Mysore at 8:30 a.m. (please ask your hotel to provide packed lunch)

Ends: Around 2:30 or 3:00 pm at your hotel

When: All days of the week. Not recommended in summer (April to June).
