About this tour: Srirangapatna is a town of historic and religious significance, yet retains a charming village-like feel with its small houses, green fields and quiet creek. It was the capital of Tipu Sultan, the 'Tiger of Mysore' who fought against the British. The town is also home to the Ranganathaswamy Temple, a Hindu Vaishnavite pilgrimage centre. This imposing temple was first consecrated in the 10th century CE and built up on a grand scale in the the 13th century CE.
Half day tour: In this tour, we will visit the beautiful Ranganatha Temple and Tipu Sultan's summer palace. We'll see the Jama Masjid, a mosque constructed by Tipu in 1784. We'll see the famous Water Gate, where Tipu's body was found after the siege of Srirangapatna in 1799, the infamous dungeons and the obelisk erected by the British as a memorial for their soldiers who died during the siege of Srirangapatna.
Optional extension to full day: We will see Gumbaz, the beautiful mausoleum of Tipu Sultan. We'll see the Paschim Vahini - a section of the sacred Kaveri river with bathing ghats where people come to perform religious rites. We will visit quiet residential areas with narrow lanes, to see daily life in the town, as well as trades and occupations of the people. We will walk through fields of paddy that surround the town, and go to a sugarcane processing workshop (if it is the right season).
